Sandra Rodriguez Barron was born in Puerto Rico and grew up in El Salvador and Connecticut. She attended the University of Connecticut and lived for many years in Miami, Florida, where she recieved a Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing. She currently lives in Milford, CT with her husband and son. She is working on her second novel, due out from HarperCollins Publishers in late 2009.

The Heiress of Water depends heavily on a sense of place. Here are some of the photos I've taken of El Salvador recently.

I cherish the photo on the left, taken at Playa El Cuco, after sunset, at lowtide. I am walking with my father, who taught me to take notice of the vastness and beauty of this place. "This beach is so wide you could land a jet here," he used to say.
